Welcome to Fly Fish Maine
My name is Scott Howard, and I am a registered Maine Guide and a USCG Licensed Captain. I have been guiding fly-fishing on the Maine coast since 1994; prior to that, I was a commercial fisherman for five years. I was scuba diving for sea urchins in the same waters that I now fish. This experience gave me great insight into the structure of our underwater environment and the patterns of these striped bass.
I fish in Casco Bay and Saco Bay. In June, I take advantage of the “single artificial hook, catch and release” status of Maine’s world-class fishery on the Kennebec River out of Bath. As the summer progresses and through Oct 15, I fish out of Scarborough, Maine, from Pine Point. This is located 10 miles south of Portland, and less than 20 miles north of Kennebunk. This is another incredible fishery. We can fish rocky shorelines and clear, sandy-bottomed beaches on the same day. This area is not readily accessible except by trailered boats, which will help ensure an uncrowded experience. The trips are dictated by the tide, sun, and patterns of the fish. I have been fishing all over Maine, and this is the most consistently productive water we have. We also have a chance to fish for bluefish, and the opportunities to attempt a bluefin tuna on the fly are increasing every year!
